Burning Heart captures the emotion and energy of a yearly tradition in the small English town of Ottery Saint Mary where, on the 5th of November for reasons unknown, the residents of the town carry burning barrels of tar through the streets. Our aim was to create a visceral visual spectacle that seeks to take the viewer into the heart of the action.
Shot live, at night, inside open fire and uncontrolled movement. No resets, no crowd control, no safe perimeter.
The work was about exposure under flame, staying mobile in chaos, and committing to closeness while protecting both the image and yourself.
I wouldn’t have had it any other way, a full-on experience, and proud of the docu @verso_films have made!
